Foothill College Physical Sciences and Engineering Center

Project Description:

The Foothill College Physical Sciences and Engineering Center (PSEC) is scheduled to open in 2013 and is the future home of the Foothill College Science Learning Institute (SLI). The new facility has been designed to achieve the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design LEED® silver rating. The 65,800 square foot PSEC consists of three buildings: a lab building; a classroom building with six classrooms and two large lecture rooms; and common areas with conference/multipurpose space and faculty offices.

BSK Roles & Responsibilities

BSK provided construction observation and materials testing for the $42 Million PSEC. Working with the Division of the State Architect (DSA) project inspectors onsite, BSK provided DSA-certified special inspectors to observe concrete foundations and retaining walls, structural steel, metal deck flooring and roof deck, and metal stud framing. Materials testing services were provided on concrete, rebar, grout, structural steel, proof-load testing of epoxied dowels, and torque testing of wedge anchors.

  • Full-Scale Specialty Load Testing of Wall Panels

Problems/Issues Encountered:

This project had an accelerated schedule with multiple disciplines working concurrently, creating a high demand on BSK’s schedule and manpower. Also, unique testing was required on the architectural GFRC paneling, requiring coordination with the manufacturer, contractor, general contractor, architect, structural engineer, DSA and the District.

BSK Solutions:

BSK consistently provided qualified inspectors as needed. BSK also created a unique field testing procedure approved by DSA to verify the performance of the GFRC panels and provided the on-site testing to the satisfaction of DSA.
