Community Involvement

BSK strongly believes in giving back to the communities in which we work. We believe the well-being of our communities has a direct bearing on the success of BSK and our employees. Our community involvement goals are to have the most positive impact on the communities which we serve and, have our employees continue to make a difference in their communities through personal, office and firm sponsored activities. Outlined below are some of the activities BSK have been involved with.

BSK Receives Business Partner Award

On Wednesday, March 5th, BSK was a recipient of a Business Partner Award from the Fresno Compact for our support of Big Picture High School (BPHS) Each year, the Compact recognizes ten local businesses which have built exceptional partnerships with schools, contributing time and resources to help students reach their full potential. This year, BSK was one of those 10 recognized. BSK has supported BPHS by offering internships to a number of its students and by supplying guidance, materials and labor to help build a science laboratory for the school.

BSK Employee Returns from Assisting Typhoon Victims

Last month Claudia Hirotsu from our analytical lab and her colleagues embarked on a mission to raise money through lunch sales to help victims of Typhoon Haiyan which ravaged the Tacloban area in the Philippines. After raising $800.00 in lunch sales and receiving matching funds from BSK, Claudia ventured to the Philippines to help rebuilt homes. The money she raised purchased the roofing materials for a home she and her team rebuilt for a couple.

BSK Delivers 352 lbs. of food to Fresno Community Food Bank!

For the third year in a row BSK held a food drive during our annual meeting. This year’s 352 lbs. was over 130 lbs more than delivered last year. In addition, BSK also donated over $200.00 to this local charity. Thanks to all who participated to support this wonderful cause.

BSK Supports Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps Event

BSK helped sponsor the Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps (SRCC) 11th Annual Golf Extravaganza "GLOWING FUTURE" event at the Foothill Golf Course in Sacramento on October 3, 2013. The mission of the SRCC is to enrich the lives of young adults by providing a development program integrating education, job skills training and work experience on conservation projects and service opportunities that benefit the region and our corps members. Proceeds from this event, provide transitional scholarships to graduating corps members who are entering the workplace and/or continuing their education. What a Great Cause!

March of Dimes

BSK was a proud sponsor of two teams at this years’ March of Dimes MUDD Volleyball Tournament held in Fresno on Aug. 24th. Employees, family and friends came out to watch and get dirty for a wonderful cause. The event supports the California Chapter of the March of Dimes and all the great work they do!

BSK Employees Support National Parks Service Volunteer-In-Parks Program

BSK encourages and supports our employee’s volunteer efforts. On August 17-18, several BSK employees and family members were at beautiful Yosemite National Park to support the National Parks Service Yosemite Volunteer-In-Park program. BSK’s volunteer group participated in an invasive plant removal project at the park. The project’s goal is to reduce the quantity of non-native plant species which have a large impact on native plant communities and their associated wildlife. Great way to spend a weekend and help a good cause!

American Council of Engineering Companies

BSK encourages our employees to assume leadership roles in industry organizations for both professional and personal development. Recently, Adam from our Bakersfield Branch was voted in as the new State Director for the Kern County Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies California (ACEC-CA). This is Adam's second tour as State Director and his first with BSK. Adam will be representing the Kern County Chapter on the Board of Directors for ACEC-CA on issues which concern membership.

Kylee Lillich Charitable Giving Tree

BSK was a sponsor and helped organize an annual golf event for The Kylee Lillich Charitable Giving Tree organization on June 7th. The organization is an all-volunteer charity that helps needy, homeless, grieving and hospitalized children year-round (and with a holiday giving tree) with new clothes, new toys, necessities and special wishes. This year’s event was held at the Teal Bend Golf Course in Sacramento.

Sacramento Children’s Home

On May 19th, the Sacramento Children’s Home celebrated their “Haute Stuff” shopping event to help raise money for the home. The Sacramento Children’s home helps children from abused families and is Sacramento’s oldest active charity-started in 1867. In the past BSK has support the organization’s “Luxe for Life” event, benefiting the children who live at the home. This year, invited by sponsors, BSK staff went out to show their support for this wonderful organization.

Big Picture Learning Program

BSK employees supported the Big Picture Learning program a national alternative method high school. BSK started working with Big Picture Learning about a year and a half ago. Since then, BSK has entertained five interns with one finishing out his term, and is now a part time employee attending the local junior college.

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Man & Women of the Year Campaign

Sat on the nominating committee for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society‘s Man & Women of the Year Campaign. The campaign is a fundraising competition in communities across the U.S. in which participants vie for the title of Man or Woman of the Year. They raise funds for blood cancer research in honor of local children who are blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year.

BSK supports Community Food Bank in Fresno

Employees and guests contributed over 200 pounds of food and $345.00 to support the Community Food Bank in Fresno during our annual meeting this year.

Creek Week Cleanup

Employees volunteered their time for this annual event supporting the Sacramento Area Creek’s Council, cleaning select local creeks of debris and garbage.

Urban Land Institute's Sacramento Council

We were part of the Urban Land Institute’s Sacramento Council involved in the development of Sacramento’s “Broadway Vision Plan” for the future. Employees were part of a Technical Advisory Panel tasked to develop a 10-year revitalizing plan for this vibrant commercial/retail center in Sacramento. The plan outlined key redevelopment projects geared toward attracting additional business and increase visits to the area.

ASCE Young Members Forum Toys For-Tots Foundation

BSK is proud of our young engineers and their involvement in the local chapter of ASCE/YMF and their commitment to the community. ASCE Young Members Forum sponsored this year’s Toys For Tots foundation and did a great job of making Christmas a whole lot better for many kids.

Structural Engineers Association of Northern California

Our Senior Materials Engineers are active in shaping parts of the Construction Materials Testing & Inspection industry in Northern California. BSK employees are members of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC), and are participating in the Construction Quality Assurance Committee.

Exchange Student Program

BSK hosted a Kenyan Civil Engineering exchange student this past year. The student is visiting California and making numerous stops to spend time with local engineers. Members of Cal Fire asked BSK to host the student for a day and show him BSK facilities so he can spend time in the lab and field.

BSK participates in high school career panel discussion

BSK engineers have volunteered to do a panel discussion with a group of female high school students to give them information and feedback on possible careers in engineering. BSK professionals participate in this fun, interactive discussion with the students, to be held at Fresno State, to inspire them to get involved in an engineering career.

Cal State Fresno Civil Engineering-Senior Projects

Employees volunteered as judges for the Cal State Fresno Civil Engineering Senior Project Presentations as well as acting as mentors to different groups. The four projects presented by the students ranged from a landslide repair along Hwy 140 to a new amusement park.

Edison Unified School District Career Readiness Program

Our Human Resources team volunteered their time to speak to students at Edison High School in Fresno, regarding resume writing and interview skills. The Fresno Unified School District - Career Readiness Department is partnering with local Human Resource professionals to speak with high school students about these important skills. Taking the time to teach students the importance of proper resume writing and interview preparation provides the capabilities and confidence they need in order to be successful today, and in the future.

California State University, Fresno-Mentoring Program

BSK engineers graciously volunteered their time to assist and mentor engineering students at California State University Fresno with their senior projects. Engineers will be providing advice to a group of students whose project involves designing a Recharge Facility for the City of Fresno similar to that of Leaky Acres near Ashlan Avenue and Highway 168.

Kern Environmental Education Program

Members of our management team spent a week of their vacation time as camp counselors for the Kern Environmental Education Program run by Kern County Superintendent of Schools. The program teaches young people about nature and science.

National Education Association's Read Across America Program

BSK employees participated in the National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America program. NEA's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss.

“Engineers in the Mall" Program

Several members of BSK continued their involvement in the ASCE Young Members Forum. BSK team members participated in the “Engineers in the Mall” program. This program teaches young and old about civil engineering in a fun environment at the mall!

Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program

Employees supported the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program through a bowling tournament. Our BSK Fresno branch agreed to match their donation to the Bowl for Kid's Sake Team program.
